We find ourselves in a small section of the Zambezi – a short, industrious swim upstream from Victoria Falls.
It seems as though all is quite and peaceful on the mighty river … but ..
The calmness above,
belies the tumult below!
The Zambezi has many small “islands” all along its banks, with varying channels sometimes only a metre, or less, wide separating them from the mainland. This blog starts us off on one such channel with a bridge formed by a long-dead fallen tree – a very short swim up from the Falls (An ill-advised-probably-even-shorter-than-you-were-expecting-swim).
When I was first shown the log by friends of mine who live there, there weren’t any baboons, monkeys or crocodiles (although plenty of signs of them – and there were quite possibly some tadpoles) .. but there were several elephant nearby and there were many ever-present mosquitoes! For some reason it made sense to me, that the log was some sort of meeting place, and that some of these creatures had formed an unlikely friendship where they could philosophize on the meaning of life.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
