A smart penguin, a quirky chicken, and a gripping story about the perils of ocean trash!
Meet Fernando (a penguin with a plan) and his side-kick Judith (a couch-surfing chicken visiting from Africa). When their environment is threatened by almost certain disaster, this unlikely duo must use a mixture of luck, pluck, and ingenuity to save their home.
Not only do they conquer the trash, but they also launch a lucrative up-cycling venture in the process! It’s a gorgeous, timely, and hilarious tale for children who don't just want to read a story—they want to be part of the solution.
"The story is adorable, illustrations are impressive, and the rhyming is genius – fun reading for children who want to be a part of the solution!” — Alexandra Fuller, author of Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight.

Bought this book for my son and to read to my kids at school. All the kids loved the clever prose and funny illustrations. It also helped bring about meaningful conversations about ocean trash, how it affects sea life, and how we can help combat the problem we have caused. Overall, great, fun, colorful, easy-to-read book that all the kids love!

PUTTING THE 3 R'S TO GOOD USE
An adorable rhyming picture book for elementary school eco conscious readers! The author employs clever rhymes, onomatopoeia, and alliteration to create this fun read-aloud.
The plot is original and creative. Fernando, a penguin, has a guest visiting him. Judith, a brown chicken is walking with Fernando along the Arctic shore when they both become entangled with yellow string around their feet. Fearful of becoming bait for sea lions, Fernando thinks quickly. He plucks two of Judith's largest feathers.
What does he do with them and how does his discovery lead to an ingenious invention? Read this beautifully illustrated picture book to find out.

Fun, adorable and eco-friendly!
Wonderfully illustrated rhyming story that’s fun, creative and environmentally friendly! A resourceful and adorable penguin, and his equally cute chicken friend, get caught in trash (string) by the ocean – oh no! What are they to do? (Hint – the answer’s in the title!)
The story has a strong message, but is not preachy and does not lecture kids. Children will be entertained by the characters’ antics and learn about recycling without even realizing it (the best way to learn). After the story, the author includes lots of facts about pollution, littering and how it affects the environment – perfect segue for parents/caregivers/teachers to start discussions about the environment and what we can do to help save it.

Penguins and the Environment
Rhyming, environmental story about a penguin and his friend (a chicken) encountering sea pollution at the south pole. After some quick thinking and clever ingenuity, they figure out a way to recycle the waste into something useful. The illustrations are clean, crisp and engaging. The text is presented in playful swoops across the pages which will surely entertain young readers. At the end, there are lots of environmental facts and information that parents and teachers can use to further discuss with their kids. Entertaining book with a strong, important message.

Thumbs up for Fernando!
If you like themes about two friends finding a creative solution to a problem, making a big difference to those around them and becoming successful, then you will love this book. The friends are two adorable birds - penguin and chicken (who seem an unlikely pair, but it definitely works!) And I particularly like how it demonstrates the virtue of patience in crafting knitted socks!

Fantastic environmental message
My two children (8&4) both loved Fernando. They want to find out about the poor stork and the fleas and were very engaged.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. The artwork is fabulous and the story has a great environmental message but kids still found it very funny.

Turns ecological consciousness into fun!
LOVED this book! It’s short, sweet, rhyming fun! The illustrations are gorgeous & the riveting story demonstrates how even 2 people (or a penguin & chicken) can make an impact on Earth. Looking forward to more books from Mr. Pohl!
